The Bookstore Murder: A Journey for Justice: The Sherry Black Story

Kingsbury Hall

The Bookstore Murder; a Journey for Justice: The Sherry Black Story is a live stage show featuring a panel of investigative crime experts who will review this case from its beginning through final sentencing of the perpetrator. Black was murdered in her small bookstore in South Salt Lake City in 2010.

Participants will discuss the background of the violent crime, the response by law enforcement, the importance of the DNA collected, the behavioral profile of the perpetrator, crime-scene assessment, leads, the role of investigative genetic genealogy, and the conviction of the murderer 12 years later with a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Panelists include true-crime podcaster Ashley Flowers, Unified Police Department cold case detective Ben Pender who ultimately solved this violent crime, and senior investigative specialist Patrick “Zip” Zirpoli who provided victimology for the case.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Sherry Black Foundation which was established in 2017 with the mission of creating safer communities by using its resources to remove barriers in the criminal justice system in order to advance investigations. The foundation offers crime assessment training symposiums to law enforcement, case consultation to families searching for answers, and community support for the advancement of investigative tools.
